Read Here: ABOUT THE VIDEO Caution: Lasers can be dangerous. Even though this is a very low power laser, do not shine it in anyones or your pets eyes. This video is not about high power/burning lasers, but about possible use for laser communication [ see MakeMagazine , simple laser communicator circuit, and you will understand ]. The best use for high power/burning lasers is with longer distance communication with lasers. You can transmit audio (music or voice) as well as computer data (any type of file or text-chat). I think it would be good to set up a simple laser communication system for audio/voice, and then perhaps develop (digital/computer) data communications next once the system is up and working ok. The range of the 5mw laser is maby 200 yds without any light concentrators being utilized. I need to do some experiments with this. Don't forget, rain, fog (and sometimes a bird breaking the laser beam) could make laser data communication problematic. The video shows a quick and basic measurment of how much current a 5mw type of laser (ie: dollar store laser pointer) uses. I measured about 26mA using a digital multi-meter. Approximate resistance of the laser: 4.5V / 0.026A = 173 ohms This is actually the resistance of the complete "laser diode driver circuit" that is internal to the laser pointer. The actually resistance of the diode itself, is probably less since it is only part of the entire internal circuit, however, that exact value does not need to be known ...
